The city
A young city with a long river
Johns Creek became a city on December 1, 2006, after a July 2006 referendum, and covers about 31 square miles of northeast Fulton County. The Chattahoochee River forms its southern and eastern edge for 13.5 miles; Roswell lies to the west, Alpharetta to the northwest, and McGinnis Ferry Road and Forsyth County to the north.
In its northeast corner, the 192-acre Johns Creek Town Center is bordered by Medlock Bridge Road, McGinnis Ferry Road, Johns Creek Parkway and Lakefield Drive. Beside City Hall, the 20-acre Boardwalk park adds a wide elevated trail, a bandshell, terraced seating and pond overlooks.
The city’s parks include five access points to the Chattahoochee, and the National Park Service owns three units of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area inside the city: Jones Bridge, Abbotts Bridge and McGinnis Ferry. Jones Bridge is the developed one, with trails, a picnic area, a canoe and raft launch and the park’s environmental education center.
The recreation area protects 48 miles of river from Buford Dam to Peachtree Creek. Just across the water, the Medlock Bridge and Abbotts Bridge launches on the Gwinnett side put in power boats, canoes, kayaks, rafts and tubes.

Ocee Park (37 acres) and Shakerag Park (66 acres, with a nature trail past one of the city’s only working farms) round out the list.
Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center is 46 acres of ravine forest with a heritage village of historic buildings, among them the Summerour House and Warsaw Church, saved from demolition and moved there. Cauley Creek Park opened in summer 2023 on 203 acres along the river, with a 3.1-mile trail that crosses the rebuilt Rogers Bridge into Duluth.
